SUBTRACTION   

Subtraction is a process or method through which we can take aside or eliminate any number or object from group as per the requirement. For your better understand we will go through the example which will be provided below, please follow carefully –

Example 1. Suppose you have 10 no.s Apple, you will provide from you 4 no.s Apple to your younger brother. Now the question is how many Apple now you have?


So, you can find from the above picture , you had total 10 no.s Apple and given 4 no.s Apple to your younger brother, and now you have 10 – 4 = 6 no.s Apple  (Answer).

  1. Basic Subtraction:-  7 - 3 = 4 In this case, 7 is the minuend, 3 is the subtrahend, and 4 is the difference.
  2. Subtraction of Negative Numbers:-  5 - (-2) = 7 Here, we are subtracting a negative number from a positive number, which is equivalent to adding the absolute value of the negative number. In this case, 5 + 2 = 7.

Key Concepts and Properties of Subtraction:-

  1. Minuend, Subtrahend, and Difference:
  • Minuend:- The number from which another number is subtracted is called the minuend.
  • Subtrahend:- The number that is subtracted from the minuend is called the subtrahend.
  • Difference:- The result of the subtraction is called the difference.
  1. Commutative Property:- Unlike addition, subtraction is not commutative. The order of the numbers matters in subtraction, and changing the order will yield a different result. In other words, a - b is not necessarily equal to b - a.
  2. Associative Property:- Similarly to addition, the associative property does not apply to subtraction. The grouping of numbers being subtracted affects the result, and (a - b) - c is not necessarily equal to a - (b - c).
  3. Identity Element:- The identity element for subtraction is "0." Subtracting 0 from any number leaves the number unchanged. For example: 9 - 0 = 9.
  4. Subtraction of Zero:- Subtracting zero from a number also leaves the number unchanged. For example: 6 - 0 = 6.
  5. Subtracting a Number from Itself: Subtracting a number from itself always results in zero. For example: 8 - 8 = 0.
