CLASS-4
DECIMAL - THOUSANDTHS

THOUSANDTHS -

Example.1 -

If you divide a square into 1000 small squares, then one small square

                                       1

denotes one-thousandth part or -------.

                                                        1000

In above fraction we can observe that, in denominator there are three zeros (0), so in numerator we have to shift the dot or decimal point three steps towards left position. But, we can observe that in denominator there are only one digit and that is 1, so we have to place two zero before 1 to justify three digit to move decimal point three steps left.

               1

      ------- = 0.001

        1000

It can be read as  i) zero and one-thousandths

ii) zero point zero zero one

NOTE: The digits after the decimal point are read one by one. (like 0.001 is read as zero point zero zero one)

In 0.001, the integral part (the part written before decimal point) is 0 and the decimal part (the part written after the decimal point) is 001.

Example.2 -

If you divide a square into 1000 small squares, then eight small square

                                       8

denotes one-thousandth part or -------.

                                     1000

In above fraction we can observe that, in denominator there are three zeros (0), so in numerator we have to shift the dot or decimal point three steps towards left position. But, we can observe that in denominator there are only one digit and that is 8, so we have to place two zero before 8 to justify three digit to move decimal point three steps left.

          8

      -------- = 0.008

        1000

It can be read as  i) zero and eight-thousandths

ii) zero point zero zero eight

NOTE: The digits after the decimal point are read one by one. (like 0.008 is read as zero point zero zero eight)

In 0.008, the integral part (the part written before decimal point) is 0 and the decimal part (the part written after the decimal point) is 008.

Example.3 -

If you divide a square into 1000 small squares, then 345 small square

                                      345

denotes one-thousandth part or -------.

                                     1000

In above fraction we can observe that, in denominator there are three zeros (0), so in numerator we have to shift the dot or decimal point three steps towards left position.

         345

      -------- = 0.345

        1000

It can be read as  i) zero and three-forty-five-thousandths

ii) zero point three four five

NOTE: The digits after the decimal point are read one by one. (like 0.345 is read as zero point three four five and not as zero point three hundred forty five)

In 0.345, the integral part (the part written before decimal point) is 0 and the decimal part (the part written after the decimal point) is 345.

Example.4 -

                                      12561

denotes one-thousandth part or ---------.

                                      1000

In above fraction we can observe that, in denominator there are three zeros (0), so in numerator we have to shift the dot or decimal point three steps towards left position.

        12561

      ------- = 12.561

        1000

It can be read as  i) twelve and five-sixty-one-thousandths

ii) twelve point five six one

NOTE: The digits after the decimal point are read one by one. (like 12.561 is read as twelve point five six one zero point zero zero one, and not as twelve point five hundred sixty one)

In 12.561, the integral part (the part written before decimal point) is 12 and the decimal part (the part written after the decimal point) is 561.

Example.5 -

                                      125.765

denotes one-thousandth part or -----------.

                                        1000

In above fraction we can observe that, in denominator there are three zeros (0), so in numerator we have to shift the dot or decimal point three steps towards left position.

        125.765

      ---------- = 0.125765

          1000

It can be read as i) zero point one two five seven six five

NOTE: The digits after the decimal point are read one by one. (like 0.125765 is read as zero point one two five seven six five, and not as zero point twelve lacs five thousand seven hundred sixty five)

In 0.125765, the integral part (the part written before decimal point) is 0 and the decimal part (the part written after the decimal point) is 125765.
