EQUIVALENT FRACTION -
Fractions that represent same portion of the whole are called equivalent fractions.
In above first picture, we can observe that total blocks or square is 4,
1
and out of 4, one block is green colored. So, the ratio is ------
4
Now, if we observed second pictured then we can find that there are 12 squares or blocks, out of which 3 blocks are green colored.
3 1
So, the ratio would be ------- = ------- (simplified form of 3/12)
12 4
In above first picture, we can observe that total blocks or square is 6,
2
and out of 6, two blocks are yellow colored. So, the ratio is -----
6
2 1
After simplification of fraction ------ we get ------
6 3
Now, if we observed second pictured then we can find that there are 3 squares or blocks, out of which 1 block is yellow colored.
1
So, the ratio would be -------
3
1 2
so, we can say ------ = ------ (equivalent fraction)
3 6
FINDING EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS -
We can get equivalent fractions of a given fraction by multiplying or dividing both the numerator and denominator by the same number (except zero).
12
EXAMPLE.1) Find the next three equivalent fractions to -------
15
12 2 24
Ans.) ------- X ------ = ------
15 2 30
12 3 36
------- X ------ = ------
15 3 45
12 4 48
------- X ----- = -----
15 4 60
12 5 60
------- X ------- = ------
15 5 75
So, the equivalent fraction to -
24 36 48 60
------ = ------ = ------ = ------
30 45 60 75
12 12 12 12
Or, ------ = ------ = ------ = ------ (after simplification)
