MEASUREMENT - DIVISION

DIVISION OF LENGTH MEASURES -

Division of metric units is done in the same way as we do for whole numbers.

Convert to smaller units and then divide and then converting back to the units given in question.

There are some examples are given below for your better understanding -

Method.1-

Example.1)  Divide 18 km 324 m by 12.

Ans.) We have, 18 km 324 m

So,          km     hm     dam       m

             18       3        2         4

As we know that, before divide entire given digit with unit must be convert into lower units.

18 km 324 m = (18 X 1000) m + 324 m

               = 18000 m + 324 m = 18324 m    [where, 1 km = 1000 m]

                           OR,

18 km 324 m = 18 km 3 hm 2 dam 4 m

               = (18 X 1000) m + (3 X 100) m + (2 X 10) m + 4 m

   [As we know that, 1 km = 1000 m, 1 hm = 100 m, 1 dam = 10 m]

               = 18000 m + 300 m + 20 m + 4 m = 18324 m

Now, as per the given condition we have to divide 18324 m by 12 -

                  12 ) 18324 ( 1527

                         63

                          32

                          24

                           84

                            0

So, the result is 1527 m

We have to convert 1527 m in expanded form

1527 m = (1527 ÷ 1000) m = 1 km 527 m

                                       OR,

1527 m = (1527 ÷ 1000) m = 1 km 527 m = 1 km + (527 ÷ 100) m

                                               = 1 km 5 hm 27 m

                                               = 1 km 5 hm + (27 ÷ 10) m

                                               = 1 km 5 hm 2 dam 7 m  (Ans.)

Method.2-

Example.2) Divide 8 m 8 dm 2 cm by 7

Ans.)  Given digit with unit is 8 m 8 dm 2 cm which has to be divided by 7

(Process of division of above given digit is more or lase like normal division method.)                    

Step.1 - First we have divide 8 m by 7, and we get 1 m as reminder and the quotient is 1 m.

Step.2 - Now, we have to multiply 1 m by 10 as 1 m = 10 decimeter (dm).

Step.3 - Now, we will add 10 dm with 8 dm and the new dividend will be 18 dm. Now we will divide 18 dm by 7, and we get the reminder 4 dm, and the quotient is 2 dm. 

Step.4 - Now we will multiply 4 m by 10 as 1 dm = 10 centimeter (cm). Product is 40 cm, and the obtained product would be add with 2 cm. New dividend is 42 cm and 42 cm would be divided by 7, where reminder is zero (0), and the quotient is 6.

So, the desired result is 1 m 2 dm 6 cm.                (Ans.)

Method.3-

Example.3)  Divide 18 km 325 m 44 cm by 12.

Ans.)  Given digit with unit is 18 km 325 m 44 cm which has to be divided by 12.

Step.1 - First we have to divide 18 km, then the obtained reminder is 6 and quotient is 1 km.

Step.2 - Now we will place 3 from 325 m and place right side of 6, and the new dividend is 63 which is to be divided by 12, and hence the reminder is 3 and the quotient is 5.

Step.3 - The process of division must be continued either till the reminder is zero (0) or there is no digit in dividend to call down after right side of reminder.

So, obtained result is 1 km 527 m 12 cm.  (Ans.)
