MULTIPLICATION WITH MEASUREMENT UNIT -
As we all know the multiplication of two digit and three digit number and we get the product. Now we will learn how to multiply the digit along with unit.
Multiplication of metric units is done in the same way as we do for whole numbers. There are two ways of multiplying metric units.
▪ Multiply by writing in columns without converting.
▪ Convert to smaller units or higher units and then multiply.
It's same like normal multiplication, but the difference what ever it may be will be described below through given examples -
Example.1) Multiply 6 m 7 cm 8 mm by 12
Ans.)
9 9
m dm cm mm
6 0 7 8
X 12
--------------------------------
72 9 3 6
[Fill up with zero in the empty columns. Carry numbers forwarded to left column.]
So, the answer is 72 m 9 dm 3 cm 6 mm. (Ans.)
Example.2) 15 m 9 cm 5 mm by 11
1 5
m cm mm
15 9 5
X 11
--------------------------
166 04 5
[Fill up with zero in the empty columns. Carry numbers forwarded to left column.]
So, the answer is 166 m 04 cm 5 mm. (Ans.)
