DECIMAL FRACTION MULTIPLICATION BY 10, 100, 1000, etc.

   Multiplication By 10, 100, 1000 etc. (Multiples Of 10) -

To multiply decimal fraction by 10, 100, 1000 etc. we move the decimal point in multiplicand by as many places to the right as there are zeroes in the multiplier.

1) Multiply the following decimal fractions by (i) 10; (ii) 100; (iii) 1000 to -

a) 9.063

i) 9.063 × 10 = 90.63  [The decimal point is moved one place to the right.]

ii) 9.063 × 100 = 906.3  [Decimal point is moved two places to the right.]

iii) 9.063 × 1000 = 9063 [Decimal point is moved three places to the right]

b) 321.6

i)  321.6 × 10 = 3216 [The decimal point is moved one place to the right.]

ii)  321.6 × 100 =  321.6 × 100 = 32160

[The decimal point is moved two places to the right. Since in 321.6 there is only one digit after the decimal point so we put one zero at the extreme right of the decimal point as it does not change the value of the number. Then we multiply 321.60 by 100.]

iii)  321.6 × 1000 = 321.6 × 1000 = 321600

[The decimal point is moved three places to the right. Since in 321.6 there is only one digit after the decimal point so we put two zeroes at the extreme right of the decimal point as it does not change the value of the number. Then we multiply 321.600 by 1000.]
