CLASS-5
SUBTRACTION OF DECIMAL NUMBERS

Subtraction Of Decimal Numbers

Subtraction of decimal number is also needed for calculation for measurement of height, weight, length, distance, and so on

Some Important fact about subtraction –

1) Any decimal number subtracts from itself or the same number gives zero ‘0’ as a result.

Example-

(1) 24.57 – 24.57 = 0,  (2) 5.78 – 5.78 = 0,  (3) 142.248 – 142.248 = 0.

2) If zero ‘0’ is subtracted from any decimal number then the result or answer must be the same decimal number itself.

Example-  (1)  25.55 – 0 = 25.55,  (2)  375.157 – 0 = 375.157,  (3) 18.45 – 0 = 18.45

3) If any decimal number is subtracted from zero ‘0’, then the result should be the same given decimal number itself with a negative (-) symbol.

Example- (1)  0 – 2.37 =  (-) 2.37,   (2)  0 – 45.85 = (-) 45.85,     (3)  0 – 35.357 = (-) 35.357

Subtraction of Decimal –

Subtract – 1)  5.78 – 3.942 = ?

Ans.) In the above decimal form, you can observe there  two decimal number form like two decimal numbers, three decimal.

Step.1)  First convert decimal from non-similar to similar number form which will be higher side as per the place value. so, convert all the decimal numbers to three decimal numbers.

Step.2)  Write the smaller number below the greater number so as if the decimal points are placed one below the another.

Step.3) Subtract as you do for the whole number.

Step.4) Put the decimal pointin the difference directly below the decimal points in the minuend and the subtrahend.
