PROPER & IMPROPER FRACTION

PROPER & IMPROPER FRACTION -

Proper Fraction:-

A proper fraction is a type of fraction where the numerator (the top number) is less than the denominator (the bottom number). Proper fractions are always less than 1.

Example of Proper Fractions:-

  • 3/4  (since 3 < 4)
  • 2/5  (since 2 < 5)
  • 7/10  (since 7 < 10)

In contrast, if the numerator is equal to or greater than the denominator, the fraction is improper.

Improper Fraction:-

An improper fraction is a fraction in which the numerator (top number) is equal to or greater than the denominator (bottom number). Improper fractions are always greater than or equal to 1.

Example of Improper Fractions:-

  • 5/4  (since 5 > 4)
  • 7/3  (since 7 > 3)
  • 8/8 (since 8 = 8)

Converting an Improper Fraction to a Mixed Number:-

An improper fraction can be converted into a mixed number, which includes a whole number and a proper fraction.
