Subtraction of Integer On Number Line -
Rules Of Subtraction On Integers –
1) To subtract a positive integers +x, move x unit to the left of the given integers.
2) To subtract a negative integers –x, move x unit to the right of the given integers.
Subtracting one integer from another integer is same as adding the additive inverse of the integer that is being subtracted to the other integer.
If ‘a’ and ‘b’ are two integers,then
a - b = a + additive inverse of b = a + (-b)
And a -(-b) = a + additive inverse of (-b) = a + b.
The rules for subtraction of integers using number line are:-
i) To add a positive integer, move to the right on the number line.
ii) To add a negative integer, move to the left on the number line.
iii) To subtract a positive integer, move to the left on the number line.
iv) To subtract a negative integer, move to the right on the number line.
Example.1)
To subtract positive integers, move to the left of the given integer by as many unit distances as the absolute value of the integer to be subtracted. Now, we have to move from +7 to 2 units to the left to reach at +5.
(+7) – (+5) = 2
Example.2)
To subtract a negative integers, move to the right of the given integers by as many unit distance as the absolute value of the integer to be subtracted. Now, we have to move from (-8) to the right and arrive at (-2).
So, we can conclude that, (-8) – (-6) = -8 + 6 = -2
